Trump Revokes National Ocean Policy

"Yesterday, President Trump issued an executive order revoking President Obama's National Ocean Policy and replaced it with a policy emphasizing oil and gas and security. The differences between the two policies are striking. Science Magazine reports that the Trump executive order does not mention threats to ocean health like climate change and ocean acidification, protection of ocean ecosystems, biological diversity, or conservation. Trump's order emphasizes "ocean industries" specifically citing offshore oil and gas -- "[d]omestic energy production from Federal waters strengthens the Nation's security and reduces reliance on imported energy.” It also highlights the need to “promote the lawful use of the ocean by agencies, including the United States Armed Forces.”" @ourdailyplanet #NationalOceanPolicy Why would anyone even consider stopping protecting the ocean? The Ocean Foundation
