NFC Executive Director chimes in on Maine’s Arctic charr and what we are, and are not doing to protect them, as well as what we are doing that is working against them. With so much positive press regarding Maine’s Arctic charr lately, some of which is undeserved or incomplete, it was time to get the negative information back out on the table before it got lost in the positive “bucket list” press.

“From an acreage standpoint, things are much worse as we have gone from an estimated historic baseline of over 38,500 acres to less than 9,000 acres, and possible less than 7,750 acres. This represents a loss of over 29,500 acres, or more than 75%, and possibly as much as 30,900 acres, or roughly 80%.”
