George Smith

GEORGE SMITH was arguably the most recognized and influential outdoor figure in the history of Maine.  He was the executive director of the Sportsman’s Alliance of Maine for 18 years, and was a full-time outdoor author, writer and blogger.  George wrote multiple columns for The Maine Sportsman magazine for over 30 years, and a weekly outdoor-centric column for central Maine’s two daily newspapers for roughly 25 years. He also had an outdoor blog, GeorgeSmithMaine.com, as well as an outdoor blog with Bangor Daily News.  George wrote four books:  A Lifetime of Hunting and Fishing, A Life Lived Outdoors, Maine Sporting Camps and Take It From Me .  He received a number of awards including several from the Maine Press Association and Maine Conservation Voters’ Harrison Richardson Environmental Leadership Award. George was an important member of the Maine NFC Advisory Council from its inception in 2017 until his death in early 2021.
