A Victory for Wild Native Brook Trout in New Hampshire...

Just prior to COVID, NH NFC worked with NH State Representative Ellen Read on a bill that among other things looked to change the biologically flawed multi-species definition of “Brook Trout” in the New Hampshire Fish and Game rule book.

From a presentation developed by NFC to support the original pre-COVID bill.

While the brook trout definition part of the bill failed due to what NHFG said was a major administrative effort, the legislature agreed to remove the same flawed definition from statute to pave the way for NHFG to do the same on their end at a later date.

From a blog post explaining what the pre-COVID bill was all about and what came out of it.

After two plus years of waiting, effective January 1, 2024, New Hampshire Fish and Game has removed the biologically flawed multi-species definition of "Brook Trout" from the rule book and replaced it with a biologically sound definition as NFC had suggested/requested.

NFC feels now as we did when we originally pursued the change that this is a critically important step forward in regard to getting wild native brook trout the recognition and protection they deserve. It is our hope that NHFG uses this opportunity to develop brook trout specific regulations that recognize the fact that wild native brook trout are important to NH and NH is important to wild native brook trout…

special thanks to representative read, nh nfc, NH Fish and Game, and everyone else who helped change the official meaning of brook trout in the state of new hampshire…
