Informational Signs - Posting
GOAL
NFC looks to maximize public safety, minimize vandalism and theft, decrease damage from sun and weather, and make our informational signs as visible and effective as possible. We also need to minimize, and ideally avoid, conflicts with landowners and land managers.
LANDOWNER PERMISSION
No signs should be posted without the permission of the landowner.
In some cases, government agencies have general agreements that allow for sign posting on private property. If partnering with an agency in regard to logos, be sure to ask if this is the case.
SIGN LOCATION
Signs should be posted where they can be easily read. Parking areas, trailheads, angler access points, and boat launches (formal and informal) are your best bet.
Where available, kiosks and sign posts should be used for posting signs. Where not, choose a sturdy tree.
PUBLIC SAFETY
Signs should be posted where they cannot be accidentally bumped into. While we use rounded corners for safety reasons, signs still have sharp edges that could cause injury.
The bottom if the sign should be roughly 6-feet off the ground.
Posting signs outside the line of travel is helpful as well.
VANDALISM/THEFT
In addition to posting signs high enough to make them difficult to damage or remove, special hardware (see below) can be used to help minimize theft. If using standard hardware, consider rounding out the head with a screw gun or drill.
SUN/WEATHER
Wherever possible, post signs in a protected area and out of direct sun to lessen rain, snow, and wind, as well as sun damage.
HARDWARE
All hardware should be stainless steel to prevent rusting and discoloration of signs.
Use non-standard screw and bolt heads such as torque-style wherever possible to help lessen theft.
When posting signs on kiosks or wooden posts, use 1.25” stainless course-thread screws with flat ¾” washers between the screw head and sign.
When posting signs on metal posts, use stainless nuts and bolts (no longer than needed) with ¾” flat washers between the bolt head and sign, and a flat washer and lock washer on rear of post.
When posting signs on trees, use 2” stainless course-thread screws with flat ¾” washers between the screw head and sign, and ¼ to ½” rubber washers between the sign and tree to allow for growth.
