Background
An Employer Identification Number, or EIN, also referred to a Federal Tax ID Number, is a unique nine-digit number used to identify business, non-profs, etc., to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and other entities that you transact business with. It is like a Social Security Number for non-individuals.
Requirements
An EIN is required for all entities that file tax returns, even those that don’t pay taxes. This includes corporations, LLCs, partnerships, and non-profs. EIN’s allow entities to transact business without using personal SSN’s.
