Project Update: Atlantic Salmon vs. Brown Trout
The Maine chapter of NFC had a conference call today with Maine Department of Marine Resources to discuss our proposal to impose a 25" maximum length limit on brown trout in coastal waters to try to help save critically important adult Atlantic salmon from misidentification. This protection is already in place in inland rivers and streams.
Co-sponsored by Atlantic Salmon Federation and Downeast Salmon Federation, this would be easy to understand and easy to implement, and if saves even one spawning age critically endangered salmon, well worth the effort.
DMR agreed to go forward with formal procedures to present the proposal to their rules board for review. If all goes as planned it will become law in 2019.
Thanks to all for stepping up and working to address this loophole in Atlantic salmon management.
