NFC Executive Director Bob Mallard Chimes in on Endangered Species Act(s)

While species are being lost to extinction, states like Maine are refusing to acknowledge or fully support the federal Endangered Species Act (ESA). This is bad for wildlife and by default bad for sportsmen. To allow state fish and game agencies, and state legislators, to defy science, sound fish and game management, and fair play is wrong-headed. They work for us, we do not work for them…

State ESA programs allow for state-specific listings, and up-listing federally listed species (threatened to endangered) when the situation is worse than it is at the national level. State-level ESAs are not intended to challenge the federal ESA, as by the time a species is listed, it is in trouble throughout its range.

It’s time for Maine to step up and fully embrace the ESA, MESA, and MMESA. The current administration of state ESAs by DIFW and DMR is arbitrary and indefensible. This is bad for sportsmen as it is a check-and-balance we need to ensure that game species are fully protected.
