Cold Spring Brook in Cold Spring Park Gets First Ever Fish Signs...
NFC spent over a year working in Cold Spring Brook in Cold Spring Park in Newton, Massachusetts. Long believed to be fishless, NFC was able to confirm the presence of multiple age classes of golden shiners as well as American eels. Both species are native to the watershed.
As part of our recommendations, Friends of Cold Spring Park posted 2 informational signs designed by NFC denoting the presence of golden shiners and American eels on a kiosk at the entrance to the park - see above right.
This is a first step in what will need to be a large-scale long-term project to restore the stream. As it now stands, Cold Spring Brook in Cold Spring Park is one of the most degraded waters NFC has ever seen. Getting people to understand that there is life there will help gain support for future efforts.
