We Need to do More to Educate People in Regard to Rock Dams...

The culvert above is located in Virginia. In late December, NFC encountered this fish blocking manmade dam on a wild brook trout headwater stream. Sadly, the previous work done to improve fish passage was negated by a dry top manmade dam that blocked both upstream and downstream passage.

While NFC was able to breach the dam to get the water flowing and all fish to pass, the dam will unfortunately likely be built again. While NFC has an organization wide rock dam project, clearly we need to do more as the problem is only growing…
