Maine NFC’s State Heritage Fish informational sign initiative has been our most successful, and largest, project to date. Considered insurmountable by some, thanks to our dedicated volunteers, we have been able to post over 380 signs on more than 250 waters in less than three seasons.

Maine’s State Heritage Fish waters are a national treasure. They represent the largest inventory of protected wild native salmonid lakes and ponds in the nation, many of which have never been stocked and contain genetically pure fish.

While many have stepped up, and some have exceeded all expectations; Leslie, Jim and Matt Kelly have posted more waters to date than anyone else. They have posted 38 signs on 36 waters, all of which are located in Aroostook County, and as far north as Fort Kent.

As we get deeper into the project, certain volunteers become more visible due to their high level of involvement. As a result, we are going to spotlight others as we move forward. If you are interest in learning more, or volunteering, click here.

Special thanks to the Kellys for all their support, and all they have done to help protect Maine’s wild native fish!
