Just in Time for Darterfest...

While NFC often focuses on salmonids, we are not a trout conservation group per say. In fact, we are not even a gamefish conservation group. As the name implies, we are a native fish conservation group. Our focus is all fish species, regardless of whether we can angle for them or not.

NFC understands that all native species play an important role in the ecosystem, and that all native species have value simply because they belong where they are found. Minnows are no exception, and in many cases like gamefish, they are in trouble.

The Alabama chapter of NFC just received a batch of endangered darter signs. They are slated for the Turkey Creek Nature Preserve in Pinson, Alabama, home to two species of endangered species of darter: Vermillion darter and rush darter.

These informational signs represent a collaboration between AL NFC, Freshwater Land Trust, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Alabama Rivers and Streams Network, and Turkey Creek Nature Preserve.

Special thanks to AL Chair Matthew Lewis and the rest of the AL NFC team for their hard work to make this happen. The signs will be presented at the annual Darterfest in Hoover, AL, on May 23rd, and posted streamside soon after that. Stay tuned, more to come…
