Vermont Gets Endangered Sturgeon Signs...

[shortnose sturgeon] weren’t considered to exist in Vermont waters...
— Kate Buckman, Connecticut River Conservancy

For decades, federally endangered shortnose sturgeon were believed to be extirpated from Vermont waters. That was until summer 2024 when eDNA sampling tested positive for sturgeon in several locations on the Connecticut River.

WIth news that sturgeon had returned to the Connecticut River, VT NFC reached out to NOAA, Vermont Fish & WIldlife, and Connecticut River Conservancy in regard to creating some informational signage. With sturgeon signs already done for MA, ME, NJ, and PA, we were able to easily tweak the message for VT.

Special thanks to VT board member David Wein and our partners at NOAA, VTF&W, and CRC for making this happen.
