As the lights dim on the “King of Fish,” we must ask, are we doing everything we can to save this iconic fish and important part of Maine’s outdoor heritage? The answer, is no. Politics, turf, and paranoia are all coming into play as Atlantic salmon sink into the abyss.

As part of his new monthly conservation column in Northwoods Sporting Journal, Native Fish Talk, NFC Executive Director Bob Mallard writes about the plight of Maine’s critically endangered Atlantic salmon.

Listed as “Endangered” at the federal level, and existing nowhere but Maine within the United States, these iconic fish are not listed as endangered at the state level, nor are they listed as threatened, or even a species of concern.

It’s time Maine stepped up and closed this gaping hole. Failure to do so will lengthen the federal restrictions, or worse, doom the species to extinction…
