NFC Chimes in on Maine Rare Arctic Charr General Law

A rare Maine Arctic charr. (Bob Mallard)

As previously noted, Maine’s inland fishing general law establishes an aggregate daily limit for all species, irrespective of any water-specific laws in place for that species. It also sets the possession limit for the species.

After writing an article in the Bangor Daily News that challenged Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife lumping rare Arctic charr with relatively common brook trout and hatchery hybrid splake in regard to the Statewide General Fishing Law, NFC Executive Director Bob Mallard followed up with a piece that defined what a species-specific general law for charr could look like.

While a statewide catch-and-release rule for Arctic charr would be prudent when you consider how few there are and the problems we have had with them recently, it makes no sense to propose something that has no chance of sticking. The idea is to define something that provides more protection than charr are getting today, and lays the groundwork for future changes.
