Maine High School Teacher and Students Post State Heritage Fish Signs...

Nicholas Miller, a teacher at Nokomis Regional High School in Newport, Maine, and his fly fishing class recently posted two signs at access points on a State Heritage Fish water in Elliottsville Plantation.

The class, "Haunted by Waters: The How and Why of Fly Fishing," is an English elective course that blends fly fishing with literature, journaling, and conservation.

The group traveled a total of 120 miles, and spent roughly 10 hours navigating dirt roads, hiking into the pond with the necessary gear, and posting the signs.

Their effort represents the 353rd water posted and 495th sign posted in what is NFC’s largest volunteer effort to date.

While there, Nick and his students also enjoyed some fly fishing in an unspoiled pond in the backcountry of Maine where they caught several wild native brook trout..

This was a great project and important message for young people who we will need to carry the torch in the future in regard to preserving Maine’s wild native brook trout and the places they live. Kudos to Nick and his students for stepping up in support of Maine’s wild native fish.
