Campaign Update: Maine State Heritage Fish Informational Signs...
A year or so after NFC was founded, our Maine chapter undertook what is likely the largest volunteer informational sign posting project in the nation in regard to fish and wildlife. The goal was to post informational signs at Maine’s State Heritage Fish waters which the powers that be had refused to do.
Thanks to a forward thinking and cooperative fish and game commissioner at the time, Chandler Woodcock, NFC was able to move forward with a volunteer effort to get these waters posted so people knew where they were and what was required of them and why. Commissioner Woodcock also helped NFC secure a state grant to help pay for the signs and hardware.
With 585 waters, most of which are off the grid and accessible by unmarked dirt road only, many of which require a hike to get to, and some that are trailless and require bushwacking to reach, NFC knew that we would never be able to complete the job. But we felt strongly that something was better than nothing…
As of 07/30/25, volunteers have invested over 1,000 hours, driven more than 10,000 miles, and hiked dozens of miles to post 516 signs on 370 waters. There are still 67 waters that need signs where we have permission to do so. It would be great to bring that number down to zero and accomplish what no one ever dreamed possible - complete coverage…
special thanks to former mdifw commissioner woodcock, sportsman alliance of maine, maine outdoor heritage fund, and our landowner partners for helping to make this happen; nfc national chair emily bastian for managing the project; and tnc, amc, libby camps, new england bha, and the dozens of individual volunteers who help with posting signs.
