MD NFC Joins Central Maryland Fly Fishing Council...

The Maryland chapter of NFC recently joined Central Maryland Fly Fishing Council. CMFFC is a group of representatives from fly fishing organizations, non-profits, and federal and state government agencies formed to preserve and protect streams, rivers, ponds, and lakes in central Maryland and the aquatic life that call them home.

CMFFC provides a forum for communication between its constituents and the public on issues impacting the fly fishing community. They also provide a platform for groups in regard local conservation and other projects, while promoting information and education related to fishing and conservation.

Part of CMFFC’s charter, and of interest to NFC, is to provide a centralized and consolidated voice to respond to legislative and regulatory issues of concern to fly fisherman and conservationists.

MD NFC presented our mission to the group which included 3 attendees from Maryland Department of Natural Resources, as well as representatives from National Park Service (Catoctin Mountain National Park), Maryland Park Service, Trout Unlimited (Potomac/Patuxent Chapter), Brotherhood of the Jungle Cock, Chesapeake Women Anglers, Healing Waters, and several fly fishing clubs.

While CMFFC is not solely a wild native fish group, and they are as focused on fly fishing as conservation, NFC sees value in bringing as many people to the table as possible in regard to wild native fish conservation, and this includes the angling community.

special thanks to carl “butch” shrake, md nfc’s vice chair and acting chair, for making this happen and representing nfc.

[Carl] Butch Shrake gave a presentation on Native Fish Coalition, which has a mission to protect, preserve and restore habitat for native North American fish species in their ancestral waters. The focus is on not only brook trout, Arctic charr and Atlantic salmon, but also on species including various kinds of sunfish, bass, perch and non-game fish...
