NFC Executive Director Bob Mallard Joins The Northeast Aquatic Nuisance Species Panel...
NFC Executive Director Bob Mallard was recently invited to join Northeast Aquatic Nuisance Species Panel. The idea was to bring additional fish focus to the group with an unbiased and absolute pro native position. As most know, fish are often oddly missing from aquatic conservation.
The Northeast Aquatic Nuisance Species (NEANS) Panel was established in 2001. It was the fourth of six regional panels of the federal Aquatic Nuisance Species Task Force, pursuant to the Nonindigenous Aquatic Nuisance Prevention and Control Act of 1990.
NEANS operates across New England, New York, and Eastern Canada. They coordinate multi-state/country efforts to prevent, control, and mitigate harmful ecological and economic impacts in regard to freshwater and saltwater aquatic ecosystems.
The panel is made up of representatives from government agencies, non-profits, academia, businesses, and the private sector.
“When it comes to fish conservation, we’ve never really gotten it right. The emphasis has been too gamefish centric, too accepting of nonnatives, and too reliant on artificial propagation and other forms of husbandry. Nowhere is this more evident than in the trout conservation arena...”
