PA NFC Tears Down Manmade Rock Dam on Bushkill Creek

As part of an ongoing NFC-wide campaign in regard to manmade rock dams and other instream structures constructed by recreationists, members of the Pennsylvania chapter of NFC worked with Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources to remove a large dam on Bushkill Creek in Delaware State Forest in northeastern Pennsylvania.

Built in the late spring and early summer by folks wanting to cool down, or simply looking for something to do, these rock dams are abandoned in the early fall.  After the crowds leave, they fill with leaves and other debris, making them even more harmful than they were when they were first built.  This occurs at a time when wild native brook trout are staging to spawn, and can disrupt the process.

Special thanks to PA NFC Board Members John Kosar and Jacob Smith for taking the time to dismantle the dam, and for their ongoing efforts to help protect and preserve wild native fish in Pennsylvania.
