MassWildlife Steps Up For Wild Native Brook Trout...
An October 2026 newsletter from MassWildlife making anglers aware of new fishing regulations affecting wild native brook trout…
For years, while there were a few exceptions, including a couple of sea-run brook trout streams on Cape Cod, anglers in Massachusetts were allowed to harvest up to 8 wild native brook trout a day in most rivers and streams.
Long-standing fishing regulations in Massachusetts allowed anglers to harvest up to 8 wild native brook trout from rivers and streams a day…
While Massachusetts was technically tied with Georgia for the second highest daily limit in native range, most of the latter’s wild brook trout streams are either heavily regulated or closed to fishing. The only state in brook trout native range with a higher daily limit on rivers and streams was Vermont which had a 12-fish daily limit at the time
Several years ago, Vermont reduced their daily limit on brook trout in rivers and streams from 12 fish to 8 fish. This left Massachusetts tied with Vermont and Georgia for the highest daily limit on brook trout in rivers and streams in native range.

MassWildlife just stepped up big for wild native brook trout. With wild native brook trout extant in few if any lakes and ponds, and just a few rivers, small streams are the last stronghold for these fish in Massachusetts.
In addition to lowering the daily limit on “trout,” from 8 fish to 6 fish, only 3 of those fish may be brook trout. This results in a 5-fish, or better than 60% reduction in regard to brook trout. This is a huge step in the right direction. It also leapfrogs most other states. Kudos to MassWildlife for stepping up...
