Campaign Update: PA NFC Posts More Wild Native Brook Trout Signs...
The Pennsylvania chapter of Native Fish Coalition (NFC) recently posted another batch of informational signs as part of their ongoing project to inform anglers of the presence of wild native brook trout. Board members Brad Pennington, Marty Romeo, and NFC supporter Dan Neff posted four signs on Northkill Creek in Berks County, PA. Designed and paid for by NFC, the signs were posted near the Appalachian Trail connector on State Game Lands No. 10, a popular destination. NFC has also assumed responsibility for maintaining the signs going forward.
Northkill Creek is one of Berks County’s highest quality streams. From its source on Blue Mountain near Shartlesville to the I-78 Bridge, Northkill Creek is designated by the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection as an Exceptional Value Water, a classification reserved for those waterways deserving the highest level of protection. The Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission lists the headwaters of the stream as a Class A Wild Trout Water.
Wild native brook trout have been lost from many streams in southeastern Pennsylvania due to pollution, habitat degradation, and invasive fish species introductions. As such it is critical that we do everything we can to protect and preserve the remaining brook trout strongholds in the region.
