Massachusetts NFC Receives Conservation Award from Newton Conservators...
After finishing a 1.5-year Holistic Stream Assessment/Restoration project on a wild native brook trout stream in Dover, Massachusetts, the MA NFC team turned their attention to a warmwater urban-suburban stream in Newton, Massachusetts to see what they could learn.
This led to MA NFC getting involved in a second and even more urban stream in Newton. MA NFC then took a look downstream of the first project water to get a better understanding of the watershed as a whole. They then went even further downstream to see how it all tied together.
Amazingly, MA NFC has confirmed the presence of wild native fish in all the streams in Newton that they have surveyed to date. Golden shiners, white suckers, pumpkinseed sunfish, yellow perch, redbreast sunfish, and catadromous American eel born in the Sargasso sea.
NFC is honored to have received the 2026 Charles Johnson Maynard Award from Newton Conservators. The Charles Johnson Maynard Award recognize efforts “to improve biodiversity, habitat reclamation, and natural resource protection” in the city of Newton.
